GIS History

GIS History

The Canadian government was the first to build a GIS system known as the Canada Geographic Information System. It was built during the 1960s to analyze data collected by the Canada Land Inventory. Soon other governments and university laboratories built similar systems but they were not widely used until the late 1970s. At this time GIS was very limited due to the lack of technological knowledge and the very high cost of computers. In the 1980’s as costs were lowered, technology increased, and computers become widely available, the door was opened for governments and businesses. This let a number of companies begin to produce new GIS software to program computer systems to increase their functions. By the early 1990s, about 100,000 GIS systems were in operation.
