Our County

D. Gary Davis

County Mayor

There are days that will forever live in our memories – the day President Kennedy was assassinated, the day the space shuttle Challenger exploded, and 9/11/2001.  Those of us who are old enough can all remember where we were and what we were doing when these events occurred.  All three are sad days in American history.

It is hard to believe that it has been five years since the courage and spirit of Americans was tested in ways we never could have imagined.   For all of us who lived through that terrible day, the recollections of it remain achingly vivid, and the sorrow that we feel for the loved ones that were lost remains etched in our hearts.

Each anniversary is a time for prayer and reflection, and it is also an occasion to recommit ourselves to the unwavering spirit that carried us through one of the worst days in our nation’s history. By continuing to this spirit and patriotism for our country, we honor the memory of all those we lost.

Many of us in Bradley County feel that we are a world away from New York City, but each year on September 11 we join with people from around the world to mourn for the people who lost their lives.

I was honored to participate in two events in our community yesterday.  It is events like those that allow me the time to slow down and reflect on how thankful I am to live in America—the land of the free and the brave.

I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful September 11 musical program I attended yesterday morning at Bradley Central High School.  I appreciate Tom Losh and the faculty and staff for putting together this inspiring remembrance.

I also appreciate Westwood Baptist Church for hosting an Open House yesterday for emergency workers.  Church members did a wonderful job of sharing their spirit of service with those who serve us everyday.

It was a great honor to welcome the Commander and a portion of the crew of the USS Tennessee to Bradley County last week on the Courthouse Square.  There is nothing more touching than standing next to sailors with the flag waving in the breeze and listening to the Star Spangled Banner.  I am so thankful that these and others are willing to serve our country and fight for our freedoms.  Thank you Commander Nielson and crew for choosing Bradley County to spend the weekend.

I want to extend a personal thank you to all of the City of Cleveland and Bradley County emergency workers.  You risk your lives everyday to protect us and, although none of us say it often enough, thank you for the service you provide to our community.
